This article was recently written in a small town newspaper.

Stimulus package serves as assault on state sovereignty

...

Let’s remember that the federal government was created by the states specifically to be an agent of the states. The stimulus package appears to go in the reverse direction, with states serving as a tool for the federal government. We see this scenario playing out in other issues, such as No Child Left Behind, the Endangered Species Act, and management of wolves and other wildlife.

It’s time for the federal government to back off and allow states to control their destiny. It’s time for the politicians and bureaucrats in Washington to quit thinking they are better equipped to solve Idaho problems than Idahoans. It’s time to return to the basics of sound government, as outlined by our framers of the Constitution.

Recently, I joined a majority of my fellow House members in approving a Joint Memorial to Idaho’s sovereignty under the 10th Amendment. Idaho is not alone with its concern about the federal government running over states; at least 30 states have approved or are in the process of approving similar legislation. The joint memorial says that the federal government should restrain from mandating certain actions by states under the threat of civil or criminal penalties.
