Pig flu preparations
Queensland (an Australian state) has told residents to stock pile 14 days worth of food and water (link) and the rest of us are being told to prepare to do the same.
"According to the national "Australian Health Management Plan for
Pandemic Influenza", by this stage the public should be ticking off a
list of precautions such as buying an "emergency pantry" list of
non-perishable food, tissues and painkillers, preparing baby-sitters
for children whose school might close, and even "identify someone who
could help you with food and supplies if you … are ill or in
quarantine"."

I find it interesting that as of this point, there are no confirmed cases or deaths in Australia, but these precautions seem pretty drastic. I understand that there are many cases in America, and one death so far. Are you Americans taking these kinds of precautions?

60 days? At 3 litres of water a day, thats 180 litres per person. How are you storing all that? Rainwater tank?

That is very cool. I have my eye on these

So what do you have food wise? We have a lot of dry stuff (pasta, rice etc). Lots of tinned fish, but not much in the way of veggies. Lots of meat in the freezer, but that would go off quickly in the event of a power failure, so we'd have to eat that first. We have some vitamins and pain killers stockpilled too.

Re: Pig flu preparations
It says that they sell the straw in packages of 100. I'm not an expert in the American survivalist movement, but it seems like something that you folks would have a market for over there. And they say one straw provides 1 years drinking water for an adult, so you could encourage people to bulk buy
I know I'd buy some and re-sell them, if I could find people here who were interested in that kinda thing. Although our problem in Australia is more a lack of water, not necessarily its cleanliness.

I need to go back and reread that website, I didn't see where it had any prices or how to by the straws.

Not us Aussies. Well, you have to have a "valid reason" to have a gun here, but funnily enough, the government doesn't think "self defense" is a valid reason. Which is stupid, because the criminals have guns, so whats their valid reason, hm? But anyway, I'd better stop before I go on a rant

Conservatives have been saying this for years in The U.S.. I will look later but I have studies that proved armed citizens lower the crime rate,

Yea, I'm pretty familiar with a lot of that data. I've done a chunk of research on it, and being able to bear arms just makes sense. Gun rights are just one of the many reasons I'd love to move to America.

Lol. I've thought about it I see my spiritual home as being somewhere in America, maybe somewhere in the bible belt (I love that cliched southern drawl ). But it seems rather impractical. I hear your immigration laws are pretty strict (for non mexicans anyway:P).

My solution to the mexican flu is simple.
I am not allowing any mexicans within 50 yards of my house.

Re: Pig flu preparations
So is it all over now? We have a grand total one of ONE mild case in Australia, and we're in our flu season here in the southern hemisphere. The news has been saying "oh, wait til the northern hemisphere has their flu season, then there will be trouble!" but if you have the same amount of trouble that we're having, I wouldn't be too concerned. I guess we'll find out in 6 months time.
Until then, keep your nose clean, wash your hands and stay classy...

Re: Pig flu preparations
I think the Mexican Flu has gone belly up. Funny thing is, we had a stomach virus go around here that put a lot of people in a panic. Media Hype and bad management by Obongo was a bigger problem than the mexican flu.

Oh really ^_^ This news makes me happy
We are currently exploring some opportunities that will enable us to own guns legally. So many hoops to jump through though!
