Gold Star Mothers turn to each other for solace and healing

It's hard to accuse Bethel Shields of overselling her organization.

"It certainly isn't something you want to belong to," Shields said, "but it's nice to have it there."

When one realizes Shields is talking about being a Gold Star Mother – whose child has died while in the military – it's a little easier to understand the seeming contradiction.

Unfortunately, Shields said, many people see the group as a relic of the past.

During World War II, most families who lost a child in the war displayed a Gold Star flag in front windows, highlighting the sacrifice made. But during the war in Vietnam, families became more reticent, given the country's conflicting feelings about both the war and the military during a decade of cultural tumult.

These women should be embarrassed for sending their children off to die in George Bushe's personal war for oil.

These men and women volunteer , they are adults, what these Mothers should ashamed of is their kids being in the dole for a 3 rd or 4th generation.
