House Spending Panel Slashes Funding For Shipbuilding, BIW
Where Was Tom Allen?
Augusta, Maine -- In approving its version of the FY 2008 Defense Authorization bill, the full House Armed Services Committee (HASC) has eliminated funding for construction of a third DDG-1000. Elimination of the third DDG-1000 would be devastating to Bath Iron Works.
Since Tom Allen left the HASC in 2003, Maine has had no representation in the House on either the Armed Services or Appropriations Committees to fight against such cuts. In contrast, the Senate version of the same bill included a provision backed by Senator Susan Collins that fully funds the third DDG-1000, which would benefit our national security and the skilled workers at Bath Iron Works.
Maine Republican Party Chairman Mark Ellis said, "The DDG-1000 and shipbuilding is critical to BIW. The House Defense Authorization bill would be devastating to Maine and BIW. Where was Tom Allen when the House Armed Services Committee signaled that it intended to slash shipbuilding funds for the State of Maine?"
