President Calderon welcomes Khatami in effort to bypass confrontational West
In a little notice meeting reflecting growing ties between South America and the Islamic world, Mexican President Felipe Calderon welcomed former Iranian President Mohamed Khatami to Mexico City.
The two leaders met Wednesday at Los Pinos, Mexico's official presidential residence, to discuss deepening cultural bonds with the Islamic world in the face of Western notions of a "clash of civilizations.
The visit drew virtually no mention in the press outside of Mexico, even in Iran.

Doesn't seem like a big problem to me, whats wrong with some open dialogue? Whats wrong with talking to people?

I'm just suspicious with Mid East exporting terrorism into a country that has mastered getting its citizens across our border.

I understand that their may be an issue with the International Center for Dialogue between Civilizations (though I'm not convinced they have terrorist ambitions), but I don't see a problem with people getting together for a chat. Better than blowing each other up

Reminds me of World War I when Germany was trying to create ties with Central and South America...

I think that Mexico will go socialist before their next election cycle. The country and it's leadership has found it impossible to create a better standard of living for the majority of it's people despite tons of help and billions of dollars of aid. If you look at Mexico's history you'll find that despite revolution after revolution they are still the most corrupt nation in this hemisphere.
Personally I don't care what Mexico does as long as the US views the incursion of even one of their citizens illegally over our border as an act of war. Mexico will still be muy corrupt as a socialist country and if they go socialist not one US dime should flow into their country. Wonder who will replace the billions we shovel their way once we stop.
We're gonna need the fence and then some. We're going to need to be energy self sufficient. And we're going to need secure our borders, all of our borders, and deport or jail everyone not legally here.

Though I wouldn't mind a socialist state, I think its important to remember that poverty in Mexico has fallen (2004 figures) from 24.2% to 17.6%. Still, income inequality is a huge problem, as is underemployment. Bring on socialism (though I wouldn't be so sure its gonna happen)!

Mexican socialistas are just as corrupt as the capitalist ones. The entire system is rotten.
Poverty in Mexico much higher than the false numbers they report would indicate and will be even worse when we deport all their illegals back home. Decades of NAFTA haven't produced the results that billions and billions of dollars should have yet the world's richest man is Mexican.
