Civil Unrest in Southern Mexico

Back in the summer of 2006 Mexico held it's presidential. It would be a new president since Vincente Fox is uneligible, under their Constitution, to be re-elected. After the votes were all counted it was announced that Felipe Calderon Hinojosa won by a margin of .58% over his opponent Lopez Obrador. Scandals and conspiracies insued, but Obrador was unable to get even the courts to side with him. So now he has gone to the people, to the streets, to protest this.

Obrador protesting has been pulling at the heartstrings of his followers who are primarily poor citizens (poor for Mexico). This combined with several strikes conducted by teachers has led to a degraded state in Southern Mexico and has brought about a quasi-insurgency.

Merriam-Webster Dictionary wrote:Insurgency
1: the quality or state of being insurgent; specifically : a condition of revolt against a government that is less than an organized revolution and that is not recognized as belligerency

Southern Mexico has always been a center of unrest whether political or not, but it has escalated recently; so much that a few friends of mine who are bikers don't even go down there anymore. So why should we care? Because many of the attacks, carried out by the insurgents, are not just directed at law enforcement, but citizens. These harassed citizens must flee to save their lives and those of their family. Where do they go? Usually north right into the US. This just adds to the festering problem our country has with illegals.

Another problem I see is that arms dealers and smugglers must be going nuts right now selling all their "goods". This also ties in with my last article (Infanticide in China). These smugglers are not just locals, but international. If China does need a fresh supply women they are likely to find the smuggler who can get them the most for the best price; more bang for the buck you could say. All this supports and finances smugglers and traffickers who are in close with terrorists. Also know that about 1 out of 10 illegal immigrants that come into America are not Mexican; take that number and look at the projected amount of illegals that have come across the border. Makes you think, and worry.

The world does seem to be going to Hell. I just wish our government could put the pieces together.

Well, let's not start thinking that all these illegal immigrants are fleeing insurgent harassment and coming here or else we'll be granting political asylum to all Mexicans.

The fact of the matter is that many of the illegals entering our country are leftists themselves and the democracy they seek has few freedoms as we know it. They seek a socialist state as is being promised them by Hugo Chavez and in the past by Fidel Castro.

The insurgency is also quite a bit more than a few teachers conducting strikes but includes the ousting of national and local government by force in armed insurrection. Anyplace in Mexico is unsafe to go to these days and since the drug lords have united with the communistas it is only going to get worse.

I few tidbits came to mind:
Title : A New United States Strategy For Mexico

Abstract : The current U.S. strategy for Mexico is out of balance and requires major changes. Only our economic relationship under the North American Free Trade Agreement is working well. Our political and military initiatives have not met with success. United States efforts to deal with Mexico on drug interdiction, counter-insurgency, human rights, and democratic expansion have largely failed because of our lack of a focused and consistent strategy The main focus of the paper is on the insurgency in southern Mexico. The insurgency is also of great significance to the United States because Mexico is a pivotal state, which means that we must be able to work better together to safeguard and promote security, prosperity, and democratic ideals. The author argues that a resurgence of guerilla activity could destabilize Mexico through internal and external factors. Recommendations are made to revamp U.S. strategy for Mexico that cover political, military, and development initiatives.

Agents Investigate Group Operating in Mexico Suspected of Funding Hezbollah
Mexican and U.S. agents are investigating a group in Mexico that they believe is funding Hezbollah. According to El Universal, Mexico started the investigation three months ago on a request from the U.S., which is helping in the probe.

The alleged cell is suspected of financing Hezbollah rather than planning attacks itself, according to Milenio. The attorney general's office in Mexico has compiled a list of people and companies it believes have provided funds to support Hezbollah, Milenio said, but no names were given.

Mexico is home to a large Lebanese community including prominent business people such as telecommunications tycoon Carlos Slim, the world's third richest man. http://vitalperspective.typepad.com/vital_perspective_clarity/2006/10/mexican_us_agen.html

And that's not what I was pointing at. I was meaning that it will just add to the already growing threat.
